A new impulse in the development of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and nuclear science of Uzbekistan

On November 21, 2019, a significant event in academic science occurred - a resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On measures to support the research activities of the Institute of Nuclear Physics” was adopted.

This Decision is aimed at the further development and comprehensive support of scientific activity, fundamental and applied research, innovative developments, strengthening the material, technical, analytical base and personnel potential of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as nuclear science, nuclear-physical and radiation technologies.

The Decree states that for more than 60 years of its activity, the Institute has become a major research center in the field of nuclear physics and nuclear technology, recognized by the world scientific community.

Over the years, the Institute has formed and is developing world-famous scientific schools in relevant areas of nuclear science, including:

- in the field of fundamental principles of the physics of the atomic nucleus and elementary particles, nuclear theory, physics of fission and fusion of nuclei, high energies, astrophysics, radiation physics of solids, radiochemistry and others;

- in the development of applied nuclear technologies for radiochemistry, the production of radiopharmaceuticals, the manufacture of radiation instruments and equipment, the receipt of new materials and others;

-in the organization of scientific research in the field of atomic energy.

The Institute has created and effectively uses unique scientific objects: the VVR-SM research nuclear reactor; neutron generator NG-150; cyclotron U-150-II; electron accelerator "Electronics U-003"; gamma installation and several others.

The Institute also participates in such large projects as experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN, Geneva)

For the needs of the production of radioisotopes, the scientific and production organizations “Radiopreparat” and LLC “Tezlatgich” were created, which fully satisfy the needs of the republican organizations for radioisotope products and ensure its export supplies.

This Decision approved the target program for improving the Institute, the program of its research work for 2020–2024, the Institute’s target indicators until 2021, and the structure of the Institute of Nuclear Physics.

The main sources of funding for the Institute are identified. At the same time, it has been established that starting from January 2020, financing of the Institute’s staff wages, maintenance of its buildings and structures, as well as reimbursement of current household expenses is carried out at the expense of the State budget of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Thus, the Institute will switch to basic budget financing that will create the necessary conditions for organizing more effective activities of scientists of the Institute.

The implementation of this resolution will create new additional opportunities for ensuring the sustainable effective development of nuclear sciences and technologies in Uzbekistan for the long term.

The adoption of this resolution is timely and it once again testifies to the attention being paid by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sh.M. Mirziyoyev to the development of science and the support of scientific teams and scientists of our country.
